• History is being made every day, they say, and that seems particularly true in Kipling of late.

As recorders of history, it is a challenge to keep up; to sift rumour from truth, fiction from fact, in this time in the town’s history when stories intertwine and developments overlap. It’s a bit like living in a novel.

Harper’s Senate proposal flawed

To the Editor,

Suggesting that he is bringing democracy to the Senate with his proposal to make Canadian senators elected politicians accountable to their provinces shows us just how little he knows about democracy in Canada and how great a threat he and his born-again Reform Party is to democracy, parliamentary democracy and national unity. A fully or substantially elected Senate will cease to be a revising chamber and it will shift the centre of gravity in Parliament from the Commons to the Senate. The Senate will cease to be a revising chamber, instead it will quickly become a place of provincial advocacy, under the Harper proposal. Further, under the proposal for election by plebiscite and particularly under the proposal for future proportional election, senators will become creatures of party and partisan party politics in their pursuit and exercise of elected office accountable in partisan party matters to the prime minister.

2006 was a good year for Saskatchewan taxpayers

Saskatchewan taxpayers can rest easier over the holidays knowing that real progress was made toward lightening our tax load. In many respects, 2006 was a remarkable year for the province.

The good news actually began in 2005 with the establishment of the Business Tax Review Committee (BTRC). The very existence of the committee was a small victory in that the government finally succumbed to pressure from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF and others) by acknowledging there is a problem with Saskatchewan’s business tax structure.

Kipling Rec Report

The winter season has long had a bad reputation. “Oh, the weather outside is frightful” may be the start to a classic Christmas song, but the words can describe the rest of the winter season. For the past week we have been treated to some wonderfully mild temperatures, however, freezing rain, snow and wind chill can make it tempting to hibernate in front of a warm fire and dream of Florida rather than bundle up and head out into the fresh air for exercise. But there are ways to beat the elements such as dressing appropriately for the weather, drinking enough water to prevent dehydration and participating in physical activity in the community.

Pause For Reflection - Mary Christmas

There is an old story about a workman on a scaffolding high above the nave of a cathedral who looked down and saw a woman praying before a statue of Mary. As a joke, the workman whispered, “Woman, this is Jesus.” The woman ignored him. The workman whispered again, more loudly: “Woman, this is Jesus.” Again, the woman ignored him. Finally, he said aloud, “Woman, don’t you hear me? This is Jesus.” At this point the woman looked up at the crucifix and said, “Be still now, Jesus, I’m talking to your mother.”
