Zero equalization money for Saskatchewan

Filed under Home, Top Story, 9:25 am January 19, 2007

Although the federal government is guaranteeing $11.7 billion in equalization payments for Canadians in 2007-08, the province of Saskatchewan will receive nothing.

“The federal government is guaranteeing these payments to help the provinces budget for the year,” Provincial Finance Minister Andrew Thomson said. “They are guaranteeing $11.7 billion in total, including $1.7 billion to Manitoba. They are hon-ouring the Atlantic Accords for Newfoundland Labrador and Nova Scotia, yet they will not guarantee that they will meet their commitment for $800 million to Saskatchewan.”

REDA wooing retirees

Filed under News Story, 9:24 am

The Good Spirit Regional Economic Development Authority (REDA) is moving forward on a project aimed at attracting out-of-province retirement-ready people to all-season vacation properties in east central Saskatchewan.

“I commend the Good Spirit REDA for their innovation and action in promoting their region and our province,” Deputy Premier and Regional Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Clay Serby said. “Past out-of-province investment attraction initiatives this REDA has been involved in, such as the Last Cattle Frontier initiative, have been very successful.”

In February 2006, a REDA-hosted tourism business development workshop spurred discussion on encouraging “American Sunbirds” to purchase or rent vacation property in the region. Following positive encouragement to further investigate the opportunity, the REDA hired a marketing consultant to undertake a feasibility study on the concept.

Due to an increasing Canadian dollar and the high cost of promoting the region to a U.S. market, the study’s focus was re-directed toward baby boomers, retirees and expatriates living in Alberta - who still have roots in the province and are more familiar with what Saskatchewan has to offer.

“This region’s affordable living and desirable amenities, combined with Alberta’s increased wealth and fewer opportunities to purchase local all-season vacation properties there, have Alberta buyers highly interested in Saskatchewan property, opening the doors for developers here,” Good Spirit REDA manager Gordon Bulmer said. “Our next step is to bring local stakeholders, developers and property owners together to push this to the next level – the marketing phase.”

REDAs are the Province’s primary partner for economic development. The authorities receive cost-shared funding, training and mentorship support from the Department of Regional Economic and Co-operative Development.

As I See ‘Em

Prairie Valley School Division can preach all they want about what is best for the children. Busing more students greater distances is not.

They can argue (and with the blessing of the Province) that it is more cost-effective to teach to larger classes. We have yet to be convinced that the multiple consolidation of school divisions is saving us money. We suspect that it is instead being diverted (guess where).

Third review for Glenavon

Dear Editor,

As the chairman of the Glenavon Local School Board, news of a possible grade discontinuance or closure unfortunately does not put me on unfamiliar ground. In fact since joining the board this will be the third time our community has faced the challenge of defending is viability. For the most part the story is the same but once again the faces of the messenger have changed.

School meetings critical

I believe that Kennedy Langbank School (KLS) even being on the review list is crazy. If you look at our drop out rates and success stories it is obvious that small classes do work, and prove themselves to be just as good if not better than large classes. I also don’t have to tell you the effects of a school closure will have on Kennedy and Langbank. Every community on the review list will be making that point. Instead I am going to tell you some facts and what Kennedy and Langbank has coming its way.
