Three choices in upcoming barley vote

Filed under Home, News Story, 9:30 am

The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board, has announced the question that will be asked in the upcoming plebiscite on the marketing of barley in Western Canada and the criteria for voter eligibility.

“Canada’s New Government believes Western grain farmers should have the choice on how they market their grain while preserving a strong, viable, yet voluntary Wheat Board,” said Minister Strahl. “Farmers have told us that they want to be consulted on this issue – and that is exactly what we are delivering. I look forward to what they have to say so I encourage all those eligible to vote to do so.”

As I See ‘Em

• The ruling federal Conservatives’ constantly referring to themselves as “Canada’s New Government” has an eery ring to it.

It somehow brings to mind a book which 40 or 50 years ago was required reading. The book, “1984″, was a look into the (then) future at which time the citizenry’s every move would be under scrutiny. “Big Brother is watching” was the phrase then, as I recall, and the underlying theme was that the characters could trust virtually noone. Hmmm.

Hopes bid is not successful

To the Editor:

I was really surprised to see that the council of the town of Kipling took the risk of bidding on Scott MacDonald’s change of name to Kipling, to the tune of $37,373.73!!

I think the town has enough on its plate trying to enlist sufficient funds for the Kipling Film Production Co. in order to have the movie, “3 Day Test” filmed here in Kipling.

2007 an anniversary year

To the Editor:

There won’t be many people left around who can actually remember 1907, but it was a year of celebration in the two-year old province of Saskatchewan. The settlers were holding picnics, staging a big regatta, developing parks, and doing everything people do to celebrate an anniversary. 1907 was the 25th anniversary of the found of the Territorial Districts.

Christalee Froese - OPINION

It’s sometimes a struggle.

As provincial populations dip and rural areas bear the brunt of the decline, many small towns in Saskatchewan are in a fight for their lives.

It’s somewhat comforting to know that agriculture-based areas in the U.S. are experiencing a similar phenomenon, and that their town leaders face some of the same challenges as we in Saskatchewan do. A feature article from the Centre for Rural Affairs in Nebraska had me nodding my head all the way through. Take a look at the centre’s top 10 reasons why rural community development is so hard to do:

Random Thoughts

At Christmastime, I received a surprising phone call from a former and long-time Kipling Royals’ senior hockey player, Kevin Fonagy. He asked me if I was interested in playing on the Royals’ alumni team in the 2nd Annual Kipling Royals vs. Windthorst Pirates Alumni Game. The event was started, last year, as a fundraiser for the Kipling Health Foundation.
