Chris Toth - Pastor, People’s Church, Kipling, SK
Are we allowed to recycle jokes? I wanted to refer to that one last week about the Ten Commandments that Pastor Lincoln included in his article. You remember, everyone lined up at the gates while the Ten Commandments are read out one by one and those that had broke the Commandments were sent away. Then God sees who is left, the most self righteous, grim faced, and joyless of the lot, and calls everyone else back! (I think I’m missing something in the punch line!) But the joke begs the question, Does God have Fun? Is He interested in pleasure? Can God have a good time and does that good time include me?

Childhood memories hold a special spot in a person’s heart. Some memories bring up immense happiness while others can stir up a feared moment in a person’s life. How a person deals with these memories can affect his or her entire outlook on life.

The holiday season brings about much happiness for families. However, in December 2001, just a week before Christmas, one family experienced one of its worst fears. A beloved family member, Terrance (Terry) Sagal went missing. His family last saw him on December 18, 2001 in Regina. Two days later, his vehicle was found abandoned just south of Kennedy. Sagal left his family without any clue as to where he went or why.

Mother’s Day is a day for most of us to show appreciation to our Moms and let them know how much they mean to us. We all celebrate our Moms in different ways, depending on the bond that is shared. I know that a simple card and hug are enough to make my Mom cry, we somehow manage every year to make her emotional. My 4 year-old son saying “Happy Valentine’s Day” and making me paper flowers for Mother’s Day was more precious than anything he could possibly buy.
Many people, in and around Kipling, have been talking about how they kept busy for Mother’s Day. Some have said that they just went for a visit, others did a celebration meal and some went with gifts. Either way, a lot of Moms were appreciated this weekend.
Endangered Lady’s SlipperMissing in Saskatchewan since 1895: the Small White Lady’s Slipper
The Small White Lady’s Slipper (Cypripedium candidum) is a rare orchid historically found in Saskatchewan and has been missing since its last recorded occurrence somewhere near Indian Head in 1895. “This plant takes 13 years to mature and produce a flower, so conservation of its habitat is crucial” says Sarah Vinge of Nature Saskatchewan’s Rare Plant Rescue program. “Landowners and naturalists are needed to watch for this species in the spring. There may still be populations of this plant in the Qu’Appelle Valley, from Indian Head to the Manitoba border or possibly along the Pipestone Creek. The hope is that by creating awareness about the status of the Small White Lady’s Slipper, someone may find this plant and will call-in to report the sighting.” Currently, the closest known population of this species to Saskatchewan is near Brandon, Manitoba.
