The rising number of deaths due to a potentially dangerous and deadly bacterium, Listeria, has now taken another life, with a total of 12 deaths. Out of the 12 deaths connected to Listeria, most have occurred in Ontario. Seven more deaths, five in Ontario, one in Saskatchewan and another in Quebec, are all being investigated by the Public Health Agency of Canada to determine whether or not the same strain of Listeria was present.

Just one bite

Filed under News Story, 11:27 am

MINIMAL: Few West Nile Virus mosquitoes present. Minimal or low risk does not mean no risk; take precautions against mosquito bites

LOW: WNV mosquito development. Take precautions against mosquito bites.

MODERATE: The mosquito species that carries West Nile Virus has been recorded in numbers that warrant extra precautions.

HIGH: WNV positive mosquitoes identified in significant numbers. Precautions against mosquito bites should be taken at all times.

Regardless of the risk rating for your region, remember that there is no such thing as “risk-free”. If you can be bitten by a mosquito, you can contract West Nile Virus.

By: Darcie Thom

One bite and you may be infected. The local bloodsuckers could be carrying a virus and infecting you with one bite, and we aren’t talking vampires! Some of the mosquitoes examined in Saskatchewan have tested positive for the West Nile virus (WNV) and are therefore carriers of this potentially ugly virus.

West Nile virus mainly affects birds but has been known to infect humans, squirrels, dogs, cats, bats, skunks, horses, and domestic rabbits.

Run for a cure

In 1981, the ‘Terry Fox Foundation’ was founded and began its annual run inviting more than 300,000 runners and raising over $3.5 million. Today, over 2.5 million people participate in this run world-wide.

Unlike other fundraisers, The Terry Fox Run has no sponsorship. During his personal run, Terry Fox turned down offers of endorsements including offers from  a certain Multinational Fast Food Restaurant. He didn’t want to become distracted from his goal of creating public awareness.  Currently, the Terry Fox Run still operates annually without the aid of corporate sponsors.

The Terry Fox Run and the participants run for a cure for cancer. Money that is raised goes towards finding a cure, treatments for patients with the disease, and maintaining good health of cancer patients.

The Terry Fox Run is scheduled for Sunday, September 14th at 2:00pm for anyone interested within Kipling and surrounding communities. The Kipling School will also be participating in a Terry Fox Run on a designated school day.

Further information to follow in next issue.

Kipling SCC plans to build a new playground for the Kipling School

By: Darcie Thom

The Kipling School Community Council (Kipling SCC) developed ideas for a new playground and activity project for the school and its students. The Kipling School Community Council’s overall goal is to provide students with a healthy, respectful and effective environment that they hope will enhance the schoolyard’s conditions.

The Kipling SCC is looking to raise between $50,000 and $60,000 for their playground project that will be built in two phases. Phase one will focus on creating a much-needed area for the Grades 7-9 (Division III) students who are requesting a fenced area and picnic tables, along with music needs. Phase two will provide Grades 4-6 (Division II) students with an age appropriate playground structure, new baseball stops, possible soccer nets, fencing around their playground and so much more.

Dom and I were invited, somewhat at the last minute, to travel to Taiwan for the release of the Chinese version of the one red paperclip book this week, so we won’t be able to make the paperclip weekend.  It’s very exciting here, but Taipei is a crowded, muggy, polluted, giant Asian metropolis, so have it be known we’re not out carousing with a fill in for Kipling in any way!  It’s been a crazy blur adjusting from a 12 hour time zone difference and being shuttled around to different events, all pretty much completely confusing and really, we have no idea what’s going on.  But that’s half the fun, I guess.  We’ve also ingested many parts of animals that neither of us knew existed.  Which is equal parts exciting, disgusting, and delicious.

Along the side of The Source building, a photographic story depicts the trades that took place between Kyle MacDonald, several intrigued traders and the Town of Kipling. Kyle MacDonald had a goal of trading a simple piece of stationary, a red paper clip, for a fully functional house. He finally met his goal when the Town of Kipling offered him the house at 503 Main St. right in the heart of Kipling.
