Rudi Swiegers and Paige Lawrence are familiar names in the Kipling and Kennedy communities and with good reason!
These household names returned from Gomel, Belarus scoring 8 out of 11 in their competitions which led them to compete in Shefield, Great Britian amongst 12 other countries with a final position of 5th place out of 20. “You have to deal with nerves, you learn to use those nerves to help instead of making it worse,” said Lawrence of the thoughts that go through their heads prior and during an event, “you have to stay focused and do your job, you can’t control what goes on around you”.

Urban legends are told ’bout crazy men wearing hooks,
And so many ghost stories are retold in books.
But there was one story that I liked the most,
It’s a very eerie tale of the Bekevar Ghost.
It was a long time ago near the Bekevar church,
For the missing young woman they called out a search.
In a very few days she would have heard the bride’s toast,
But her mysterious death made her the Bekevar Ghost.
They never knew how she died on that cold night,
Now her spirit wanders in search of her knight.
She appears now and then to many that boast,
How they thought they had seen the Bekevar Ghost.
Two men drinking beer down the Bekevar road,
The car crawling along because it had recently snowed.
A glow in the ditch, beside the telephone post,
They were completely unaware of the Bekevar Ghost.
Their attention so focused on the light to the right,
They almost hit the woman, all dressed in white.
Swerving, then stopping, they were totally engrossed,
But they still didn’t know it was the Bekevar Ghost.
She accepted their kind offer and climbed in the back,
Pointing at a farmhouse that looked like a shack.
They turned at the corner and started to coast,
But the snow blocked the access for the Bekevar Ghost.
Her heart is still broken for the one that she loves,
When the men turn to quiz her they find only her gloves.
She’s disappeared again, back to her observation post,
Where she will forever remain the Bekevar Ghost.

Until fairly recently, I was under the assumption that I wasn’t an over-the-edge superstitious person…. but boy was I wrong! It seems as though, through my life, I was unintentionally taught to believe that superstitions (A.K.A. ‘Old Wives Tales’) were very much real and believed that they had some sort of impact on myself and the people around me…. what a sad reality to find out that all along I have been just plain ’stupid-stitious’!

Corbin Bernsen is planning on being in Kipling for several days in November. At that time, a contract will be signed between Kipling Film Productions and Corbin’s production company. He will also be scouting sites suitable for the filming.
Corbin has sent a list of some of the things that he will need for the filming. As Kipling Film Productions has an extremely limited budget, we are asking you to think hard about what you, your family, or your organization may be in a position to donate or offer at a reduced rate for all or part of the time that filming is in progress. The fewer number of items that need to be rented, the more chance there is that the film will be a success. It is the intention of KFP to set up a data base that can be tapped as needed. Some of the items are solid physical items, while others are more of a service nature. A detailed list will be available in due course. Film credits will be given for any assistance in this project. Stay tuned for further updates.

The 2008 regular rodeo season wound down for another year with competitors giving it their all in the last couple of weeks in order to finish up in the top ten, thus securing a berth at the finals. For tie down roper Jarid Berglund, the last two weeks paid off. He won Kamsack with an 8.9, was second at Wapella with a 9.5 and fourth at St. Rose, MB with a 9.5. He finished in first place in both the Canadian Cowboys Association (CCA) and the Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association (MRCA). He will win Year End Champion buckes from both associations, but more importantly he earns the chance to compete for saddles at both finals. The MRCA finals start October 24 at the Keystone Centre in Brandon, while the CCA finals go during Agribition in Regina. This is the second time Jarid has won the season leader title in the CCA. He was also season leader in 2006. Berglund and his partner Graham Stewart also made the team roping finals at Brandon, with Jarid finishing ninth and Graham finishing eleventh. They just slipped out of the top ten in the CCA standings the past couple of weeks.
