Tonight when families gather around the dinner table for their meal, it’s likely most of the food on the plates travelled approximately 1,500 miles. That’s a long way just for one meal. Take into account all the pollution it causes combined with the fact that food may not remain as fresh as one would like and eating that meal may not seem so appetizing.

On June 3, Seed Hawk opened its $2.8 million dollar manufacturing facility. This recent upgrade adds 15,000 feet of manufacturing space and 4,000 feet of office space, which will help expand production of one-pass air drills from 100 to 300 a year.

Seed Hawk planned the expansion due to increased demands world wide for its innovation air drills. The company wants to ensure it meets demands while continuing to manufacture high quality products. “The new facility allows us to do just that,” said Pat Beaujot, Seed Hawk owner. “Now we can expand our marketing efforts without compromising the services we offer to our loyal, existing customers.”

Red Coat Waste Authority’s newly resumed collection of plastic and tin for recycling could soon end up back in the landfill if everyone does not start using the program properly. Since Red Coat reinstated its collection of plastic and tin on April 1, many of the bins have been overflowing with unacceptable contaminates, or in other words, garbage.

In honour of National Volunteer Week from April 27 to May 3, the Citizen set out to highlight the volunteer career of a couple local community members. Although everyone deserves much recognition for their hard work, many that were asked for an interview turned down the opportunity, only to recommend someone else for the recognition. Finally, two people accepted the interview, only after insisting there were others that did more work. The stories of these two individuals recognize both their hard work and that of the many other volunteers in Kipling and the surrounding area.
