We live in a world in which television programs feature the activities of people whose lives are filled with activity and adventure. Our favorite programs are filled with movies heroes or heroines who accomplish difficult and dangerous missions. After watching this type of program, our own lives can seem small and limited. The same thing can happen, I believe, as we read accounts in the Bible of the heroes and heroines of our faith. If you turn to the book of Hebrews, chapter eleven, you will find a listing of some of these people and their accomplishments. By faith, Noah built an ark and saved his family from the flood to come. By faith Abraham, in his elderly years traveled to the Promised Land. By faith, Moses led the people of Israel from captivity in Egypt.
If we turn out thoughts to the modern era, we might admire the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, or Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Again, we feel that we might never be as holy or as faithful. As well, perhaps we know that we will never leave our mark on society in the same way shown by these respected people. Thus it was interesting to read a quote by Mother Teresa in one of our local newspapers. The quote was, “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”
I was amazed by this quote because of its simple wisdom. We may not all be called to greatness but that does not mean that we cannot be faithful in the matters either small or large, that are a part of our daily lives.
We all say that we want a better world for ourselves, and for our children. If each person took a small step in faith, tried in some way to overturn an injustice, or make life better for another, slowly, step by step our world would be transformed for the better.
As well, when Jesus talks about faith, he often mentions faith beginning as a small thing. In Matthew he says that if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for us! So I invite you to consider what small step in faith that you might make today. As we live together in faith, nothing will be impossible for us. Let’ go out there and live the faith, one step at a time.
