Got Film of Madrid, Spain, Shooter’s International of Toronto, and Ten Speeds Pictures of Regina, teamed up to film a television commercial for Volkswagen, in Kipling on the weekend.

The filming created quite a stir as crews moved from one site to another throughout the town.

Perhaps as many as a dozen locations were used, among them the curling rink, the school gymnasium and three different residences including that of Kyle MacDonald at 503 Main St.

The commercial, part of a campaign promoting the Volkswagen Polo car in Spain, will feature MacDonald’s trading of a red paper clip for the house; an endeavour which captured the imagination of people the world over.

Besides MacDonald himself, more than 20 local people were cast in various roles for the filming. Many more appeared as extras in a re-creation of the final trade in the sequence, and the welcoming of “the red paper clip guy” to Kipling.

Roles included a farmer, a mechanic, merchants, families and curlers, and scenes involving these were shot in appropriate locations in and near town.

Another segment was of the nearby countryside, taken from a camera truck motoring toward the outskirts. This was filmed Saturday morning, while an icy west wind was blowing. The cameraman, who was by necessity riding outside of the vehicle, said later that the cold was nearly unbearable while shooting this scene.

Yet another filming location was from high up in the Paterson Grain Co. elevator, which afforded a panoramic view of the town and countryside.
