Let’s give kids an opportunity to play

To the Editor:

To say that it bothered me to see no child over the age of 8 play baseball in Wawota last spring would be an understatement. Growing up in Wawota and experiencing all that the game has to offer makes me think that we as leaders can and should provide the same opportunity I had as a youngster to as many kids as want to play the game.

Wawota was once the envy of many in the Saskatchewan baseball circles and inspite of all the changes and challenges we are presented with we cannot accept having so few children playing the game this spring and for many to come.

Folks, I challenge you to take a leadership role, don’t stand back and let what happened last year happen again. Don’t accept anything but success when it comes to putting teams on the field.

Registrations are right now being accepted at the Wawota School or at Downunders or by talking to Lee Struble. If you have a child, a boy or girl that wants to play, regardless of where you are from let it be known. If you know of a child in a neighboring community that does not have a place to play…take the lead…invite them.

A meeting is being held on April 3 at 7pm at the Wawota School to bring back the Wawota Minor Ball Association to the strength it has enjoyed in the past…if there is anything you can do to help…even just provide encouragement, please attend. Lee tells me that all executive positions are filled so don’t be afraid to attend.

It’s a great game…let’s do our part and give the kids a chance to play.
