During the 2007/08 school year, Mrs. McCarthy and her grade 3 students, of Kipling Elementary School, worked towards making their Space Day a success.

The students were required to work individually, in teams and as a class to prepare for the big presentation for the parents on Thursday, May 22nd.

Each student had the opportunity to learn about an area of the Solar System (that they chose) during science class, and did creative writing about aliens and outer space during language arts class.

Each student made a colorful poster with information and pictures along with a paper mache planet that they painted and decorated. The individual students were assigned to report and record what they saw in the night sky, they called these reports “Sky Journals”.

“We made cupcakes. Over the days, we made lots of stuff. We made stuff at starting of spring,” says Tabitha Vellacott. “We got to make these (planets) out of paper mache, then we painted them and they had to dry,’ says Kearstin Mytopher.

The grade 3 students worked together to decorate the Library and paint a beautiful mural for their presentation for their parents and guests. They made delicious cupcakes and decorated them, as a group, for everyone that attended.
