Getting to know the candidates for Kennedy Council

Filed under News Story, 11:22 am October 20, 2006

The days are limited until the civic election—October 25.

One evening I began to think the residents of Kennedy may not be aware of who all might be running for councilor at this election—therefore I decided to ask each one of them to give me a short report why they let their name stand for councilor and what some of the issues they would like to address if elected.

Tye Cancade will be the new Mayor. To quote: “It is my hope the new council will do their best to benefit the village of Kennedy, and hopefully everyone will see the need of keeping taxes paid in full—Kennedy is one of the villages with a reasonable tax.

Yvonne Bertalon — being the only incumbent among the candidates for alderman wishes to thank the voters in the past “and everyone who has encouraged me through the past years on council. I have let my name stand and will support the new mayor and the next council members.

“To promote Kennedy as a great place to live and raise a family; also for seniors to retire. Kennedy has a new school, where a great number of pupils have excelled in their careers; is close to the Kipling hospital, and the new medical center with three doctors practicing. Close to larger centers only to mention a few: Yorkton, Regina, Estevan, Brandon.

“And of course only a few miles from many nice golf courses, and am happy to have a grocery store with the gas pumps.

“Also the hotel and post office, the senior center, community hall, Henry’s shop, library, Parkside business and Schmidt welding business.

“I would like to continue volunteering on the rink, hall, R.D.C. and library boards.

“To continue to listen to the residents with their views positive or negative and discuss these at the monthy meetings.”

Ken Margetts — “Lived in Kennedy all my life.”

“I have served on the Kennedy fire brigade, the Kennedy Chamber of Commerce and worked for the Village.

Things I would like to see done:

“With the 100th celebration for the the Village of Kennedy to be held in 2007, I would like to see improvements to our streets, and village so we could once again be proud to welcome people home to help us celebrate.

“See streets improved, see the village equipment maintained.

“Beautification of trees and grass within our Village and cemeteries.

“Everyone please come out and vote on October 25.”

Theresa Istace — “I believe a councilor should be accountable to the electorate. We should try to do our best and work with different levels of Government for the betterment of our community. I believe I’m up to challenge.

“My current community in volvement includes President of the CWL, volunteer on the Kennedy Housing Board, Treasurer of the Kennedy Friendship club and the Booster Club, committee member of the Memory gardens, volunteer at many community projects.

“I’ve had experience working with other people with my experience of being on the Regina Diocesan CWL Council for 14 years and I’m currently serving on the Sask. Provincial CWL Council. I am also a member of the Parish Council and the Palliative Care committee.

“Three issues I’d like to see addressed: 1 - Clean up some of the abandoned yards, get the grass cut, etc. Tall grass is a fire hazard. 2 - I would like to help make Kennedy an affordable, attractive place to call home. 3 - Willing to work with other councilors for the betterment of the town.

Barbara Dixon — “I am interested in how the Village council operates.

“I have chosen Kennedy to be my home with a business and I believe I can help serve the community. I would like to see the village progress by supporting new businesses into the community.

“I would like to see more youth employed, with the overseer of a council member.

“I would like to continue with some unfinished business—mainly ways of raising money for the Kipling hospital fund without it being put on taxes.

Juanita Armstrong— “I am proud to be a resident of Kennedy. I am interested in politics, followed through with a nomination, and excited about the future of our Village.

“I plan to work hard to bring to bring new ideas into our village.

“I will listen to the concerns of the citizens of our village and will deal with them accordingly.

“I will represent the Village Of Kennedy to the best of my ability and with great pride, and most of all work and support each of the council members and our mayor.

Jill Dorrance — “I choose to run for councilor because I feel young people need to be involved with the Village and wanted to try something new.

“What I hope to accomplish if successful: Keep Kennedy a friendly, and safe place to raise a young family. Keep Kennedy viable and I am commited to taking opportunities and face challenges that will arise with in the Village.

Correspondent —About 20 years ago there were all men on the council—times change—one lady represented the council for approximately 8 years and was replaced by another; today there are five ladies running for the position - very different to most of the surrounding councils.

Good luck to whoever are our representers.
