Still no Councillor for Silverwood’s Division 1

Filed under News Story, 9:15 am November 24, 2006

The Rural Municipality of Silverwood continues to have a problem in filling its vacant Division 1 seat on Council.

A second call for nominations passed Nov. 13 with no candidates coming forward. Council has set Dec. 18 as the third nomination day for the now vacant position.

If none is received on the third call, a couple of options are open to council.

A later date could be set to once again seek nominations. This would in all likelihood be well into the new year; perhaps six months from now. In the meantime, the other council members would keep an eye on the needs of Division 1.

The Act also allows for redefining of the Division boundaries within the municipality, resulting in a smaller number of Divisions, and thus, the number of seats on Council.

Acting Administrator Doreen Jurkovic says rate-payers might not be aware of qualifications for municipal councillors, since some changes have been instituted in recent years.

Councillors need no longer reside within the Division which they represent, though they must be residents of and ratepayers to the municipality.

They must, however, be nominated by residents of the Division which they seek to represent.
