While some farmers hit the ground running as fast and as far away from farm life as possible, others chose to embrace it.

Thirteen-year-old Logan Meszaros helps out on his family farm in a big way. “He pretty much does anything and everything on the farm,” said Jo-Ann Meszaros, Logan’s mother. “He does chores for us. He can feed the cattle, drive the tractor - he’s our hired man and our right hand man all in one.”

Logan may work real hard, but he enjoys his work. “I like it, I like the tractors,” said Logan. “Today I fed the calves and I was out welding.” And he’s quite the welder. “He knows how to weld . He was just out welding this afternoon fixing a feeder for us,” said Jo-Ann.

Although Logan drew a bit of a blank when asked about his favourite things to do on the farm, his mom had no shortage of answers. “He’s always kind of helped. Even when he was like 5 and 6 years old he would come out and if a calf needed a bottle, sometimes he’d have to feed the calf a bottle cause sometimes the mother wouldn’t take it, and he would take it out and feed it. He always enjoyed doing that, taking a bottle to a calf that needs to be bottle fed.”

The oldest Meszaros boy, Logan began helping in a big way on the farm about two years ago. But he’s not the only kid that helps out. Turns out, farm life is a family affair. “I have two other children, Taylor, she’s older and she wants to go off and do her own thing,” said Jo-Ann. “I would think she might be interested more in the business side of it [farming]. She’s of course adamant that she’s not going to marry a farmer right now.”

“Joey’s only 11 so I’m not sure what he’s going to want to do,” said Jo-Anne.

But they know exactly what Logan wants to do. He plans to make farming a career - a brave move for a young person these days.

For now, all of the Meszaros kids like helping on the farm and they don’t complain about the hour of chores everyday. Jo-Ann and Darren know they are lucky and really appreciate their children’s involvement on the farm. “We’d be lost without their help,” said Jo-Ann.
